About me

About Michael Donovan

My name is Michael Donovan, and for more than 25 years I’ve been working inside real bathrooms, not just on paper. I earn my living renovating bathrooms for families, landlords, and homeowners who want spaces that are practical, safe, and good to look at.

I didn’t come from an academic background or design school. Right after finishing high school I joined my father on job sites, carrying tools, mixing materials, and watching how he dealt with leaks, uneven walls, and tight deadlines. Little by little, he trusted me with more responsibility: first helping with demolition and prep work, then laying tile, installing fixtures, and coordinating full remodels.

Over the decades I’ve:

  • Renovated bathrooms in old homes with tricky plumbing and crooked walls.

  • Installed and repaired countless toilets, showers, tubs, and vanities.

  • Laid everything from simple tiles to more demanding patterns and finishes.

  • Helped clients balance what they want with what their budget and space can realistically support.

Most of what I know has come from that daily, hands-on work: mistakes I had to fix, unexpected problems inside walls or under floors, and conversations with clients about what actually works for everyday life.

Why I Started MyBlueBath

MyBlueBath is my way of taking what I’ve learned on site and putting it into clear, honest information you can use at home.

Over the years, I noticed that many people were asking the same questions:

  • “Where do I start with a bathroom renovation?”

  • “Is this material really waterproof and durable?”

  • “How much should I expect to pay for a new shower or floor?”

  • “What can I safely do myself, and when should I call a professional?”

A lot of the advice online is either too general, too “perfect,” or disconnected from what actually happens when you open up a wall or remove an old tub. My goal is to close that gap with practical guidance based on real jobs, not just theory.

What You’ll Find on This Site

On MyBlueBath, I share:

  • Step‑by‑step overviews of common bathroom projects.

  • Tips on choosing tiles, fixtures, lighting, and other materials that last.

  • Budget breakdowns and examples to help you plan costs.

  • Simple explanations of technical topics like waterproofing, ventilation, and layout.

  • Ideas for making small bathrooms feel bigger and more comfortable.

I don’t claim to know everything, and building codes and prices can vary depending on where you live. What I share here is based on my own experience and what has worked on real projects. I always encourage you to check local regulations and, when in doubt, talk to a qualified professional in your area.
